Problem of the Week for the Week of January 17-21

Four boys work together painting houses for the summer. For each house they paint they get $256.00. If the boys work for 4 months of summer and their expenses are $152.00 per month, how many houses must they paint for each of them to have one thousand dollars at the end of the summer?

when you subtract 256.00 from 152.00 it is 104.00
and to make 1,000 dollars you must divide 1,000 and 104 and you get 10

I think they will have to work 39 houses for each them to earn $1,000. I got that number by subtracting256-152 and got $104 then multiplied by 39 and 38 to see which was closer to 4,000(the amount needed for each of the four boys to have 1,000)and got 39 houses as the right answer.

I got 18 houses because there were 4 boys and each boy needed a thousand dollars. I drew a chart and then I subtracted the cost of the Items because they had to pay for the items that subtracts from the money earned.

4,000($1,000 for each boy) + $152(4 months)= $4,608.00 is what they have to make in all. Divide $4,608.00 by $256 which is what they get for each house they paint. they have to paint eighteen houses.

It will be 18 houses because I used a strategy called "Guess and Check".
First, I multiplied $256.00 each house by 20(guess)houses and got $5120.00.
Then, I multiplied $152 a month by 4 months and got $608.00.
Next, I subtracted $608.00 from $5120.00 and got $4512.00
Then I divided by $256.00 each house by 4 boys and got $64.00.
Next, I divided $4512.00 by 4 boys and got $1128.00.
Finally, I subtracted $1128.00 minus $64.00(a house=19houses)and got $1064.00. I knew I could subtract another $64.00(18 houses) from $1064.00 and got $1000.00(the amount each boy is spose to have).

P.S.: Sorry for the long explanation

My answer was 40 houses!

The first thing I did on this problem was write out all the information that I needed to know. Second, I added $104.00 together ten times. The sum of that was $1,040. (That is the closest I could get to one thousand without it being exact) Next, I figured out that the $1,040 was the money the boys earned together doing ten houses if they each wanted one thousand dollars they would have to paint 40 houses because, 10 houses equals one thousand dollars times 4 equals 40 houses they need to paint for each of them to get $1,040!

first you multiply $256.000 four times and get 1,024 (months). then you multiply 1,024 four times (houses) and get $4,088. for each boy to have $1,000 evenly you divide by the four boys and get $1,011 per boy. so they should paint 4 houses.

First,I figured out how many houses they would need to paint to cover their expenses. They have a profit of $104 each month, which I got by subtracting $152 from $256, which equals $104, or $26 a boy. Now, if they paint 1 house a month, times 4 months, they paint 4 houses and the boys have $104 each. Now, I guess they need to paint 5 houses a month. 5 houses a month times 4 months is 20 houses. If they charge $256 a house, they have a revenue of $5,120. Minus their expenses of 4 times $152, or $688, they have a profit of $4,432. Divide that by 4 and you have $1,108 apiece. Now, if they paint 19 houses, they have a revenue of $4,864, expenses of $688, and a profit of $4,176. That leaves each boy with $4,044. Now, I tried 18. A revenue of $4,608 and expenses of $688 leaves a profit of $3,920 which leaves each boy with $980. Not enough. So, it will take 19 houses to see each boy have $1,000.

152.00 * 4 months=608.00 there expences they each want one thousand=4000.00+608.00=4608.000

dived 256 per house into 4608=18 houses.

1.they get $256 per house.
2.I divided $256 by 4.(equals $64)
3.divided $1000 by 64.(15.625)
if you round it,it will equal 17.

A: they must paint 17 houses.

ClaireG- Buckalew said...

First I figured out how much money 1 person made per house. I did 256/4 and got 64. Then I added 64 18 times to get 1,152. I had to do 1,152 instead of 1,000, because they needed to cover expenses.

Michelle J.-Centanni said...

Expense: 152*4= $608
$1000 each other= 1000*4
(1000*4)+608
4000+608=4608
4608/256=18
So 18 Houses

Tom V.-Buckalew said...

The boys need to paint 14 houses. Well actually, it's 13.25 but you don't just paint a part of a house...

ellen l.-centanni said...

I think that the answer is 151 houses because I divided 4,000 by 256 and got 150 r160 so I rounded up.

The boys want to earn $4,000 for the summer as well as $608 expenses for paint and other things. So they need $4,608 which means they must paint 18 houses ( $4,608 divided by 256 = 18 houses.)

My answer is 10 because I added all of the prices together, counted how much times they got payed until I got to about $2000 and then subtracted $152 the same amount of times I added the money that they got payed.

Kara H. Centanni said...

first you multiply 152 by 4 because 152 is the expenses for each month and there are 4 months that equals 608 then you see how many times 256 goes into 4,000 because they each need 1,000 and there are 4 of them it equals 19 then you subtract the expenses(608) and get 3,528 then see how many more times you can fit 256 into it twice add the 2 to the 19 to get 21 that is the answer.

4 months x $152.00 expenses =$608.00
4 boys x $1000.00 = $4,000.00
$4,000.00 + $608.00 = $4608.00
$4608.00 divided by $256.00 per house =
18 houses would have to be painted for each boy to earn $1,000.00

$1,000 each
1,000 times 4 = 4,000 all

$4,608 divided by
$ 256 = 18 houses
They must paint 18 houses for each of them to make $1,000.

SamC-Centanni said...

First I will multiply the expenses by 4. Next I will guess and check to find out how many times you need to multiply the payment for one house so it is more than 4,608.

$152 $256 $4864 They will
x4 x19 -$608 have to paint
608 2304 $4256 19 houses.

They would have to paint 38 houses, because you start out with one house and subtract the expenses {256- 152}. The answer is 104, and then you divide that by 4. Each person gets $26 per house. Then you divide 1000 by $26, and you get 38 houses!!!! Check by doing 256 x 38.

Azelia L-Buckalew said...

The expenses are $152.00 per month and they will paint for 4 months so I multiplied it by 4 and got the answer $608.00. If they all need to have $1000 I just need to add $1000 4 times. That's what they need to earn. Since the expenses were $608.00 they needed to earn $608 dollars more. I added $608 to $4000 dollars and got $4608.00. The last step was to divide $4608 divided by $256 and the final answer is the boys needed to paint 18 houses.

Andrewc. Centanni said...

The answer is 39 houses because if you do 104 times 39 you get 4,056 dollars so the answer is 39 houses

My anwser was 18.
This is how I got my answer I did I did 1,000 times 4 that is 4,000. Then I did 152 times 4 then I got 608. Then after that I added it to 4,000. Then It equaled 4,608 then I divided it by 256 and I got 18.

My answer was 18.

Alice G.- Buckalew said...

Each person will have to paint 18 houses.

First I divided $256 by 4 to find the amount of money ($64) each person got for one painting a house.
Then I divided the $152 by 4 to find the expense ($38) for each person every month.
Next I find the total expense for each person all summer 'four months' by multiplying $38 times 4 and got $152.
Finally I multiplied $64 times the number of houses '18' , and then subtracted the total expenses which is $152 to make the equation equal to $1000.

David.T said...

10 cause they make 256$ but they have to pay 152$ in expenses and 256-152=104 so the are really only making 104 per house and 104x10 = 1040.

Josh B-Buckalew said...

They would make 1,600 dollars total. They would have to make 600 extra dollars to pay their expenses so they would have about 1,000 dollars left.
