Problem of the Week Answer: The Puppy's Pen

The answer to last week's problem was any combination of measurements that gave you a perimeter of 50 feet.  The pen that would give the puppy the most room to play would have been a pen that was 13ft by 12ft which would give an area of 156 feet.

Problem of the Week February 7th

Miss Guy has a very energetic puppy. The puppy loves to play outdoors, so Miss Guy decided to build a pen to allow her pet to be outside while she is at school. She just happens to have 50 feet of fencing in her basement that she can use for the pen.

What are some of the ways she can set up the pen that uses all the fencing?

What are the dimensions of the rectangular pen with the most space available for the puppy to play?

Answer to problem of the week

The answer to last week's problem is 15 days or 16 depending on if you counted their initial amounts as day 1.  On Day 15 or 16 the amounts would be double at 24 links and 48 links.  You should have made a table and added until you got to the day when the amount was doubled!  Great work guys!!!!

Answer to Problem of the week January 24

The answer to this week's problem is $105.60.

1. Consider the area of the room with the two closets:  15 feet x 14 feet=210 square feet

2. Now take out the area of the two closets (16 square feet and 18 square feet for a total of 34 square feet)

3. Subtract 34 sq. ft. from 210 sq. ft. to get 176 square feet of ground that needs to be covered with carpet.

4. Multiply 176 square feet by $.60 to get the total for the carpet which is $105.60.

More for the Floor
question
Nika is selecting floor tiles for her room in her family's new house. No tiles will be put down in the closets. Each tile is 1 foot square and costs $0.60. All the intersecting sides of the tiles meet at right angles.
How much will the tiles cost if there are no tiles left over?

Answer to problem of the week January 17th

The four boys must raise $4,000 for them to each have $1,000 at the end of the summer.  In addition, they must cover their expenses at $152.00 a month for four months.  That comes out to $608.  Alltogether, they must make $4,608 to reach their goal.  If you divide that amount by $256.00 (the amount made from one house) you will get 18 which is the number of houses they boys must paint to reach their goal.

Answer to Zoe's Border

Since the length of Zoe’s blanket is 6 yards, the width is 2, because 2x3=6.  You can use an equation to solve for the width:

Length=3 x width
6=3w
6=3(2)

Since the width is 2 yards and the length is 6 yards, we use our perimeter formula to find the distance around the blanket:

(2xlength)+(2xwidth)=perimeter
(2x6) + (2x2)= p
12+4=P
P=16 yards

Since Zoe is putting border around both sides of the blanket, we must multiply the perimeter by two to get 32 yards, so:

Length=6 yards
Width = 2 yards
Perimeter= 16  yards
Total Ribbon Needed= 32 yards

Problem of the Week January 4th: Zoe's Border

Zoe is putting a border around her blanket and she needs to know how much ribbon to buy.  The lenth of the blanket is three times the width of the blanket.  If the length of the blanket is 6 yards, what is the width of the blanket?  What is the perimeter of the blanket?  How much ribbon does she need to buy total for her border if she wants to put it on both sides of the blanket?

Solve and explain how you got your answer.  You must solve for the width, perimeter, and total amount of ribbon needed.

You will have until Friday afternoon at 5pm to post your answer!
