Disappearing Cookies

Kathy had fun baking lots of cookies. She left them on a plate to cool while she went shopping with her dad. Her brother saw the cookies and took 1/2 of them to his Scout meeting. Her sister took 2/3 of the remaining cookies to share with her friends. Finally, her mom took 1/2 of the remaining cookies to her Book Club meeting. When Kathy and her dad got home, there were only 5 cookies left on the plate.

First I multipled 5 times 2, Which equals 10. Then I added 10 to 20, to get 30. Then I multipled 30 by 2, to get 60.

kathy baked 20 cookies

She made 60 cookies
I started at the end of the question.
I multiplied the number of cookies left by 2 which is 5x2=10
Then, I multiplied 10x3=30
After that, I multiplied 2x30=60 to make the number of cookies she started with.

The answer is 30. First I added 5 and 10 and got 15, because half of 10 is 5. Then I added 15 and 5 to get 20. Then I added 20 and 10 to get 30.
So she baked 30 cookies at the beginning.

? - 1/2 - 2/3 -1/2 = 5

*change division into multiplecation.

5x2=10
10x3=30
30x2=60

-
60 - 1/2 = 30
30 - 2/3 = 10
10 - 1/2 = 5

Kathy baked 6 and two thirds cookies. I know this because first I know that 1 half plus 1 half equal one whole. So people took 1 and two thirds. Then, I add 5 cookies left plus 1 and two thirds and got the answer 6 and two thirds.

i just woorcte my way up,so there are 5 left and mom took5 so do 5+5=10 and 2/3= and 10= 30 half of 30 = 30 +30 so I got 60

i guessed then check i got 60 then divided by 2 =30 then again 15 then i compared them 2/3 and ?/15 and my number was 10 so i drew a circle like a pie and put 15 pieces in it and colored in 10 and got 5 pieces left.
so my answer was 60 cookies she started out with.

First, I drew a box acting like a plate for the cookies then I drew a line in half and 2 lines horizontaly so their would be 3 lines horizontaly then I shaded in one half of a side to show that her brother had taken one half of the batch. Then, I shaded in the top two of the other half to show that her sister had taken two thirds of that half. Next, I drew a line vertical in the last little box and shaded in half of it to show her mother had taken a half of what was left. Finally, I numbered a 5 in the last box and then drew a line vertical in all the squares. I counted 12 boxes total so I multiplied 12 boxes by 5 cookie left which equals 60. cookies that she baked. Kathy started with 60 cookies in all.

First I worked the problem backwards, so I multiplied 5x2 which is 10. Since 10 is 1/3 and they took 2/3, it would become 30. Then you multiply by 2 which is 60. So Kathy baked 60 cookies

My answer is 60 cookies.

The strategy I used to solve the problem was to work it backwards. First, I started with the 5 cookies that were left on the plate. Second, I saw that mom took half of the cookies so I doubled 5 and got the product of 10cookies. Next, I figured out that 10 was 1/3 of 30 cookies by using cross multiplication to find the equivalent fraction. Then, I took the 30 coookies and doubled it to get the original 60 cookies because 30 is half of sixty.

To check my work, I started with 60 cookies. I followed each of the steps in the word problem and ended up with the 5 cookies that that were left on the plate in the problem. That is how I know my answer is correct.

i think i got this qustion right because i worked it backwards starting with 5 and if you add 5 + 5 you get 10 and 10 is two thirds of fifteen and fifteen is half of thirty so that ment the the answer is 30

End she had 5 cookies. Mom took ½ more. So now, there are 10 cookies. Her sister took 2/3 of the cookies, so 1/3 is a tenth of what she has now. So, she had 30 cookies which is half of the original amount of cookies she had. Her brother took half so 30 x 2= 60. She had 60 to start with.

What you would do is work backwords.Start with how many there were when they got home, which is 5.If Kathys mom took half, and ther were 5 left after, that means Kathys mom took 5,which also means there was 10 before mom took them.Next is her sister, and if there were 10 after she left, and she took 2/3 that means she took 20,which also means there was 30 cookies before she took any.Next is her brother, and if there were 30 cookies after he left, and he took 1/2 that means he took 30,which also means there was 60 in the beggining.Kathy baked 60 cookies.

Kathey baked 30 cookies. I know this because 5+5=10 and 3times5= 15. 2 3rds of 15 is 10 and 15times2= 30

what i did to solve this problem i worked backwards so she was left with 5 and her mom took 1/2 of the cookies so that means before her mom took some then her sister took 2/3 of the cookies and 10 is 2/3 of 15 and before that her brother took half so 15 is half of 30 so the answer is she started with 30

Leandro Bracho.MsCentanni said...

Kathy baked 60 cookies because the 1/2 Mom took is 5, which means there were 10, 2/3 that sister took is 20, then 3/3 is 30 cookies, brother took 1/2 which is 30, so she baked 60 cookies.

We need to work backwards from the remaining 5 cookies:

Mom took 5 to her Book Club meeting
Now 10 (1/3)
Sister took 20 cookies
30 cookies before sister took
Brother ½ which is 30

Answer - She baked 60 cookies

To check the answer we work forward:

She baked 60 cookies
Brother took ½ = 30
30 Left
Sister took 2/3 = 20
10 Left
Mom took ½ to her Book Club = 5
So there are 5 left

she baked 60 cookies.i got this by doubling 5=10 then multiplying that answer by 3=30. Then multiply 30 by 2=60

i worked backwards. the mom took half of ten to get 5. the daughter took 2/3 of 30 to get 10. the son took half of 60 to get 30.

my answer is: Kathy started out with 60 cookies.

If there was only 5 left after mom took half then there were 10 to being with 10 being the one third left with 30 that was there before. After brother took half of the 60 kathy baked. The answer is 60 cookies.

Meghan Swantkowski said...

The answer is 60. I got this answer by working backwards. First you have to do 5 times 2 which is the half and you get 10. So from there her sister took 2/3 which means 1/3 left. So 2 times 10 is 20 then plus the 1/3 is 30. Then 30 times 2 which is the other half which gives you 60. then you work it forward and you get 5 cookies left.

Emily Mccown said...

if there is 5 cookies left and her mom took half so you 5+5 = 10 and 10 is one third of 30 and the then you add thirty plus thirty witch is 60 so she baked 60 cookies

Kathy your family has been eating your cookies i got the number of cookies that you started out with by multipling 5 by 2 because 5 is the number of cookies that you ended with then I multipled 3 by 10 then when your brother ate he I multipled 30 by 2 and that 60 and thats how I got the starting number of cookies. Then I checked my work by working backwards.

kythy had cooked 33.2 cookies because of 5 is 10 and 2/3 of 10 is 6.6 and 16.6 times 2 is 33.2

I worked backwards so she ended with 5 so half is 5 of ten so then she took 2/3 which made that 30 and so the greater half of that is 60. So going forwards she started with 60 then half would be 30 then 2/3 would be 10 and half was 5.

CameronC.centanni said...

the answer is 60 because i did 5x2=10 and then i did 10x3=30 then i did 30x2=60 that is how i got 60 cookies
